Fun Friday: Shampoo Optional

I read everywhere these days that celebs are big proponents of not washing their hair every day. Some are down to once or twice a week! Sounds kind of icky, but as a mom of a toddler with another baby due any day, I’ll take any shortcuts I can find. Plus, it’s supposed to keep your hair healthier and shinier because it doesn’t get as dried out.

I hate to admit it, but I just can’t follow through! The first day, I style my hair as usual, using just a tiny amount of product. The morning of the second day is usually fine; I touch up with a straightener and some hairspray, and can leave the house feeling pretty good. But by the end of the day, my hair is flatter than day-old champagne. Of course, no one else has ever mentioned that my hair looks a little limp, but I feel so incredibly self-conscious that I’m embarrassed for even my husband to see me!

I guess when you have a team of stylists, hair gurus, and other professionals at your beck and call to touch up any errant strays or limp-looking locks, the shower-optional look can work for you. As for me, I’ll see you in the shampoo aisle.

How to Wear Spring 2009 Trends

Depression-Chic styling ruled the runways this spring, but those looks are far from wearable in your normal everyday life. Luckily, The Clothes Gallery has a few key pieces that can bring the look to your wardrobe in a subtle way.

The Great Depression Redux: Spring 2009

With the slumping economy and worsening global market, the words “recession”, "crash", and “depression” are words we hear all too often. Appropriately, style.com has coined the term “depression-chic” for the 1920’s-inspired looks we saw on the Fashion Week runways.

Sheath dresses and sack dresses were adorned with utilitarian belts, fringe, and lots of layered necklaces, while waists dropped to hip-level on layered tops and jackets. Some designers even went the extra mile, using crinkled, smudged, or ripped fabric to really play up the depression-era feel.

Cute Spring Jackets and Vests

Like I've mentioned, I love to wear layers. What better way to stay warm in the cool weather or to add a bit of fun in the warm weather? You can change the entire look of a top by adding a jacket or a vest to it! Right now, I love these 2 pieces from The Clothes Gallery:

The first is a linen jacket from Tribal Sportswear. I love the bright blue color for it's cheeriness, and I love the easygoing silhouette for its laid-back attitude. I would wear this with khaki cropped pants or jeans and a vintage tee, with raffia sandals and a bunch of bangle bracelets.

The second is a hooded vest, also from Tribal Sportswear. I would wear this alone with Tribal's cropped pants in Earth on a hot day, or I would wear it over a white tee (long or short sleeve) with jeans on a cooler one. It would also look great over a lace or satin tank top for an evening out; the juxtaposition of the vest with girly textures and styling would be a fun way to play up the military feel of the piece.

Jackets and Vests for Spring 2009

I love layers, any time of year. Tanks, tees, cardigans, jackets, and vests…they’re so easy to mix and match for a variety of easy looks. So, I’m super-excited about suite101.com’s article that says that jackets and vests are going to be huge for Spring 2009.

On the runways, textures and silhouettes contrasted one another to show off the best of them all. Tight cropped leather mixed with a long and loose satin vest gives a sexy-but-sweet feeling (left). In the image on the right, a loose ruffled and ruched vest is paired with a sleek cropped jacket for a flirty look that’s still sporty. Bryan Reyes (center image) balances a menswear-inspired textured jacket with a silky tank top with feminine bead embellishments.

How to Wear the Spring Color Palette

Jungle-inspired hues and prints will be big trends for Spring 2009, as we saw earlier this week. Nic & Zoe, a theclothesgallery.com favorite brand, has a great selection of tops and dresses that bring the color story home.The wrap top in natural, the mesh cardigan in berry, and the tie-front top in turquoise would be great additions to a work wardrobe. The Spring 2009 Palette

The warm weather this weekend (at least here in the upper Midwest) has really gotten me excited for spring, so I am thrilled to start talking about trends for the new season. What better inspiration for spring than lush tropical colors and bright floral prints?
Coral, dusty pink, pistachio green, citron green, turquoise, lemon, and fuchsia are on Pantone’s list of colors, and Style.com shows lots of deep blue and grey combos, rose, beige, tangerine, and peach.
Patterns are either in-your-face tropical prints or soft and subdued florals. Forget dainty prints or polka-dots, though. No matter how bold or soft, the patterns are lush and large, but still look elegant when paired with neutrals or metallics.

My Resolution

2009 is one-twelfth of the way over already. Can you believe that? I certainly can’t! I started off the New Year with the intent of changing my blogging format to make it a quicker read. I succeeded in doing that with my posts last month, but I didn’t bring you any new fashion advice or trends. I am sincerely sorry for that.

Starting next week, I will bring you a variety of short posts every few days. One will highlight a couture trend from the runways and show a few fun pictures of how the models pull it off. The next will show a few items we carry at Yaya’s that fit the trend and I’ll tell you how to incorporate them into your current wardrobe. The third one, probably posted on Friday, will be more fun to help you get ready for the weekend. I’ll answer reader questions or talk about common fashion no-nos, I’ll show you a few hot accessory or beauty trends, or I’ll post some of our new arrivals.

New Nic & Zoe!

One of my (and your, based on the great response we get to the product) favorite lines has just arrived! We have four new pieces from Nic & Zoe, designed by the fabulous Dorian Lightbown. Bright color and unique prints characterize these great new arrivals. My favorite is the silk-and-cotton Brushstrokes dress. The light flowy fabric means it would look fantastic now under a black cardigan with black heels and black tights, or with the mesh cardigan in turquoise and strappy black or nude sandals for spring. The full skirt and belted waist make this a flattering and fun silhouette.
I’m also loving the Blue Leaves cardigan. The bold turquoise and brown leaf print is subdued enough for winter’s wardrobe, but would look great with the Also Perfect tank in turquoise for a bright pop of springy color. Coping with the Cold

Temps are supposed to hover somewhere between frigid and miserable for the rest of the week. That's great news if you love the look of hat hair and chapped skin, but not so nice for the rest of us. Glam it Up!

December is here and Christmas, with all its fuss and festivities, is on-deck. What better time to fantasize about glamorous looks for holiday parties? Now is a great time to wear something a little more glitzy, rich, or extravagant than you normally wear.

Though the little black dress is always a good look, especially for a company party or a nice dinner, this is the time to add some sparkle! Stash your phone, lipgloss, and breath mints in a black satin purse covered with large black stones for a low-key addition, or toss on silver sandals with sequin accents and a silver shawl for a punch of shine. Or try a copper and black combo for an updated look. Lynn Ritchie makes a great shift dress with a print metallic layer under a sheer black one. The overall effect is one of shimmer and shine, rather than in-your-face metal.

If you prefer pants for your gathering (very tempting when the winter winds are whipping through), satin or wool are great winter-y options. I love a great satin wide-leg pant with mile-high heels and a jewel-tone cashmere sweater or sequin tank. The richness of the two fabrics make an otherwise-boring look fab and festive for your gathering. A New Outlook

As Sherree wrote in her first post, "Fashion should be fun." This is the most important thing to remember when choosing an outfit. Far too often, I see people stressed-out, upset, or even frantic when shopping. I, too, am guilty of this fashion no-no. I can't tell you how many times I've thought "I can't go out tonight. My outfit isn't trendy enough." Or, "This skirt that was so adorable in the store is too dressy for work and too casual for the party." Or even, "Nothing looks good on me. I give up!"

But, I sat down today to do some research into winter trends, and I realized that clothing should be the wrapper on your body. It doesn't make you who you are. It isn't life-changing (though a great pair of heels can improve your outlook on life). It doesn't define you; it just enhances who you are and shows off what you love about yourself.

I made a decision today to never let my clothing be a cause for concern. My new motto is: If it is made well, fits well, and flatters my figure, there is no reason not to wear it. Not everyone can wear every trend well, so I need to find the ones that I can wear, and work them! Or, even better, I can take a trend and make it my own. Cutesy actresses like to wear leggings with hip-grazing tops and flats. Well, I'm only 5'2", and that formula would make me look like I'm 12 years old, so I've revamped the trend to work for me: I'll wear dark (read:slimming) skinny jeans with 2" heels to lengthen my legs and a top that hits below the hips to lengthen my torso. Instantly, I look longer, leaner, and more grown-up.

So, here is your assignment: find one trend that you can adopt and make "yours." Menswear? 40's-inspired suits? Red as your signature color? There's no limit when fashion is the choice!

Great Grey Days

There is one trend I keep coming across while shopping that I haven’t found mentioned in any runway recaps. Grey is still a hot, hot color, though it isn’t talked about much. I’m not sure why that is, though it may be that it’s become so popular it doesn’t need to be mentioned anymore. I was a little reluctant to put too much money into buying grey at first because I was afraid it would be a flash-in-the-pan. Turns out I was wrong. Grey is a great neutral, but it’s also a fun color all by itself.

The Clothes Gallery just received a great collection of suiting pieces from Nicole Benisti in grey stripes. I’m loving them. They’re cut well, classy, and cute. The pants, vest, and jacket can be worn together as a suit, with printed shoes for a fun kick. Or mix the individual pieces with funkier items for a variety of looks. A bright button-down under the vest would be great with jeans for a weekend look, or with the pants for a put-together look that isn’t quite as formal as the whole suit. Colored shoes and chunky jewelry would complete the look perfectly.

November is here, and along with it, the icy cold whipping winds and dreary rainy days most of us dread. Confessions of a Fashion Blogger

I have a confession. I don’t like to shop. Strange, right? That’s not to say I don’t enjoy it when the planets are aligned, the weather is sunny, and my hair is perfect, but most days there are other places I’d rather be than cooped up in a store.

That’s part of the reason I love internet shopping: I can squeeze in 10 minutes looking at jeans while waiting for my coffee to brew, or I can browse winter coats for an hour while watching “Project Runway.” I can compare features between brands, select style options, and look for the best deal in pricing and shipping, all without leaving my recliner.

On those occasions that I am in the mood to shop in “bricks-and-mortar” stores, I have a handful of favorite places to visit, and an arsenal of tricks for making sure I get the best service and have the best time possible. I’d like to share a few of those with you.

First, do your best to find a place that suits your style. Are you plus-sized or petite? A boutique that only carries normal sizes and lengths probably won’t be able to offer you very much. Do you like really fashion-forward, edgy pieces? Find a place that caters to your need to be on the cusp of new fashion, rather than someplace that carries more classic looks. Do you want to look stylish without blowing the bank, fashionable without being a slave to trends, and youthful without looking immature? Check out The Clothes Gallery! Now that you’ve found a place to shop, how do you make the most of your shopping trip? If at all possible, try to shop at off-peak times. I know that’s much more difficult to do for some of us than others, but there’s nothing better than blowing a vacation day in a cute downtown shopping area, grabbing a fancy cup of coffee, getting your nails done, and browsing the stores just for fun. If you can’t make it during the week, try to stop in first thing in the morning on a Saturday, before the crowds hit and the chaos sets in. If you can, make an appointment to shop so that you’re guaranteed time with a sales associate. As a bonus, you could find yourself hitting it off with her and making a great new friend with the inside scoop on new designers and great deals. If there’s a designer you love, find the store that carries the largest selection of that line and give the sales associate your information. Most stores are more than happy to call a customer when new arrivals come in, and some will even hold a few pieces in your size until you can get there. Be open to trying things that don’t look like your typical style. Some of my favorite pieces of clothing are things that I passed up on the rack a time or two before finally giving them a chance. Trust the staff when they bring you piece to compliment something you’re already trying on. They know the merchandise and they’re really just trying to help you out. And, if you can (self, take note) don’t shop when you’re rushed, angry, or irritated. You need to be in a positive state of mind to truly evaluate an item of clothing, and you may need to try on half a dozen different black tanks in various sizes and styles before you find the perfect one. Really take the time to be sure what you’re about to buy is something you’re actually going to wear. What’s the use in having a closet full of jeans if you always go back to one or two favorites?

Finally, these might seem unimportant, but they’re huge: be polite to the staff, and pick up after yourself. If you want great service, be someone they want to give great service to. Would you want to be helpful to someone who barely acknowledges you, or would you want to shop in an area after someone left a huge pile of clothes on the floor? Just use some common courtesy when you’re out and about, and you’ll be sure to get that returned to you tenfold.

This week, we’re going to take a look at a woman’s most prized possession- her handbag. In the past few years, bags have been all about excess; huge, floppy bags with flashy metallic hardware and stones have been all the rage. This season, bags are smaller, more structured, and much more practical. Fortunately, though, that doesn’t mean that they’re boring. In bright leathers or crazy prints, they’re still a great way to show some personality! As always, The Clothes Gallery carries a wide selection of bags to get you set for the season.

Wrap it Up!

Cool fall days and even colder winter days are fast approaching. If you’re like me, and a lot of others I know, this means I can finally dress in the layers I love so much. Tank tops, camisoles, and cute tee shirts are so much better when you can wear them layered under soft, cozy sweaters. This fall, wrap sweaters are perfect for a variety of looks.

Sisters makes a cocoon sweater, available in both wine and charcoal. It has a cutaway front, making it swingy and fun. It would go well with jeans and a tee, finished with casual flats or sueded boots

525 America makes a cocoon sweater with a thick rib knit, ¾ length sleeves, and shawl collar. This is a perfect workday look. Try it with grey pants, a brightly-colored top, and heels for a sophisticated and fun look.

Chaudry makes a cropped version of the sweater with a wide knit, available in eggplant and brown. This is a more elegant style that would work well with a fitted satin tank and a flouncy skirt.

Boyfriend Style

One of the hot runway trends this year is masculine-inspired clothing for women. This trend started with Spring’s safari look and belted jackets and tops. For fall, the trend is very similar, though there are some feminine touches, like ruffles and rouching.

A lot of designers are carrying jackets and suits this fall. Nic & Zoe and Yuvita both carry great belted jackets and matching trousers or skirts, and KLd Signature carries a swingy cropped houndstooth jacket. Kld Signature’s jacket would look fab with one of the ruffled tops below and a simple black pencil skirt or black pants.

Cino makes a great assortment of long-sleeve tops that work as pretty layers under your cardigans and suiting pieces. All have exquisite detailing, like hidden buttons covered with tiny ruffles or tuxedo pleating on the neck area. These shirts are feminine and pretty, and compliment your masculine looks perfectly.

As always, pants are the foundation of your outfit. One or two great pairs of pants can carry you through the whole season. Origami Clothes

When you think of origami, chances are good that you don’t think of clothing. Maybe you picture those cute little paper swans, or some ornately folded cloth napkins at a fancy dinner. This fall promises to change that. Designers all over are adding fun folds, twists, and pleating to their fall lines. Exquisitely feminine, yet distinctive and bold, folded fabric is a fun way to add some pizzaz to your look.

Yuvita’s unique look lends itself well to this trend this fall. The grey skirt has a wide folded panel hung asymmetrically across the waist and a front inverted pleat for a unique look. The shirred lapel jacket has tiny pleated cuffs and a belted waist for feminine definition.

Karen Kane’s semi-sheer purple and black top has smocking on the boat-neckline and sleeve cuffs, which leave the full sleeves and full-cut top with delicate pleats and folds that fall nicely across the body.

Charm School on Thursday

I was reminiscing with my mom over the weekend about goofy things I used to collect as a kid. My favorite things, from about 3 years old until fourth grade, were those plastic charms from vending machines that you were supposed wear on plastic chain necklaces (remember, this was the 80s). I had a shoebox full of them, and I cherished them so much that I never wanted to actually wear them for fear of loosing them!

I’m a little older now, but I still have a love of charms, and I know I’m not the only one.
Next Thursday (September 11), the Clothes Gallery is holding Charm School from 10 AM to 8 PM for all you charm lovers (and charm newbies) out there. The lovely ladies there will help you become a jewelry designer, as you mix charms, bracelets, and necklaces to create your own unique piece. Featured designers will be Pandora, Brighton, Pilgrim, and Debra Sheperd.

Chunky knits always seem like a perfect look for fall and winter. Warm, cozy, and comfy, they’re a great way to keep out the chill but still look hot. This year, chunky knit sweaters and cardigans are at the top of the must-have list for fall. As always, Yaya’s carries just what you need to make sure you’re a “do” and not a “don’t.”

Pretty Patterns

Standout patterns, from argyle plaid to watercolor-inspired abstracts, are flooding the fashion world this season. A bold pattern can make an otherwise-dull outfit outstanding, and a turn a simple silhouette into something stunning. Check out a few great pieces below.

The “New Harmony” mesh top by Anac is a unique piece. It has a tapestry-look piece inset into the front so it looks as though you’re wearing a layered outfit, without the bulk of extra layers. Last week we talked about the dark, rich colors that will be making the grade for fall. Easily going hand-in-hand with them are the luxuriously textured fabrics they will accompany. Fluffy sweaters, soft velvets and velours, lush silks and satins, and nubby tweeds all add interest and spice to everyday outfits. Again here, a few key pieces can go a long way toward updating your wardrobe without maxing your budget.

After a few weeks of highlighting reader questions and fashion secrets, it’s time to get back to the Fall 2008 trends. This fall will be all about rich color, luxurious fabrics, and standout patterns. If you’re anything like me, you love a great deal. Sale, clearance, discount….you zero in on those words like a sniper to his target. So, to appease all you bargain-hunters out there, here are a rundown of a few hot sales items from Yaya’s. They’re sure to keep you in-style and on-trend for less!

Denim for All!

Time for another reader question! This week’s quandary: What jeans should I be wearing this season? Skinny, wide-leg, high-rise, low-rise? The fabulous answer: wear whatever flatters you!

Sure, that sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t.

This season’s newest, most on-trend style is the wide-leg jean. With a mid- to high-rise and in dark coloration, it looks great with a fitted top or cropped jacket. Though you may be tempted to wear a really wide pair, steer clear of anything too loose or you risk looking shapeless.

Skinny-jean lovers out there, don’t fret. You can still wear your painted-on jeans all season long, just be sure to mix them with a top that has some extra volume. A loose tunic, a babydoll top, or a chunky sweater once the weather is cooler, will provide a nice contrast to the tightness of your pants.

For those of us afraid to commit to either of these trends, we still have two great solutions: first, try a pair of flared or boot-cut jeans for a classic flatters-everyone look. Fitted in the waist and thighs and looser from the knee to the ankle, these jeans do double duty, working well with both fitted tops or looser ones. Or, if you prefer a slimmer look without going too tight, try straight-leg jeans. These will also go well with either slim or voluminous tops, and they will never go out of style!

Reader question: What is "business casual" attire?

In an attempt better target my trend research and writing to be truly helpful to you, the reader, I will occasionally be answering questions from readers in my weekly column. If you have a question, please send it to me at kelly@theclothesgallery.com, and it could be featured in an upcoming week.

To start with, I will answer a question that I (and the ladies at The Clothes Gallery) hear quite often: Just what, exactly, constitutes "business casual" attire? This is a great question, though a difficult one to answer, because dress codes vary greatly by company. I've worked for a company where pretty much anything was acceptable for business casual dress, with the exceptions of jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. I've also worked for a company where business casual simply meant that a full suit wasn't required. I guess the best I answer I can give is this: err on the side of conservatism.

A knee-length skirt with a sweater or blouse is a good start. Tailored pants of any cut, along with a casual or dressy top (nothing sleeveless), are a simple and classy look. Cropped pants may or may not be acceptable, depending on the length of the hem. Generally, ankle-length is fine, but mid calf or shorter is not. In many circumstances opened-toe and -heel shoes are acceptable, and stockings are generally not required.

If you’re concerned with business casual attire for a luncheon or other event, there is probably more leeway. You could wear city shorts (Bermuda shorts in a crisp tailored fabric) or a sleeveless top and be perfectly acceptable. Of course, if this is for a workplace, consult your company's dress code and take a look at what those around you are wearing. That is often your best reference.

If you feel that the dress code doesn't allow you to be "you", try adding some fun accessories. A print scarf or headband, an armful of bangle bracelets, or a pair of brightly colored shoes can liven up any outfit and express your true personality. Colorful Mixer

The combination of neon and neutrals is a fun look that you can show off now, and still wear well into fall. The bright punch of color gives this trend a youthful feel, but the right pieces can still be appropriate for any occasion. The trendiest of us might even be able to make this look work in a more formal setting, by pairing, say, a tangerine cocktail dress with tan jewelry and accessories, or by showing a lime button-down top under a suit. Here are a few ways to try this look for everyday wear.

These Karen Kane Capri pants in blue, when paired with this Lynn Ritchie silk tunic in grey, make a great foundation for this trend. For summer, add some cute sandals and a few bangle bracelets and you’re set for a business-casual day at work, a lunch date, or an evening at a street fair. June is finally here, which means it’s time to start checking out the fall runway shows and picking the hot new looks for the season. Most fall 2008 looks are a far cry from the floral-heavy feminine looks from spring, but there are a few that transition nicely. Let’s have a look…

The first fall trend, which I think translates nicely into the transition period, as well, is the combination of neutral colors with neons. Pick a few of your brightly colored tees and tanks from summer, layer them with grey, beige, brown, or black, and you’re all set for fall!

Masculine 70s looks are a holdover from spring. If you’ll recall, a few of the hot spring trends were 70s inspired, including belted waists and safari-inspired looks. These become looks perfect for cooler weather when structured jackets over collared shirts and high-waist are substituted for halter tops and high-waist shorts.

The only feminine-feeling trend for fall is that of the maxi skirt. Most maxi skirts shown for fall were in neutrals or floral print, so they will wear well with spring’s lingerie-inspired and transparent trends. A long skirt with a camisole will be perfect for today’s warm weather, while the addition of a snuggly cable-knit sweater and boots would be great come the cooler weather.

I spent a few days downtown this weekend and, as always, I was amazed at the many different styles I encountered while walking Michigan Ave. From punk-rock wannabes with multi-colored Mohawks and black combat boots, to groups of kids in their Prom formalwear, I saw all kinds of clothing. My favorite, of course, was the multitude of wedding parties getting their pictures taken on the medians of the busy streets or in front of the famous architecture.

What I really noticed, though, was that in spite of the multitude of trendy stores and trendy people, most people were dressed very simply. Most women wore straightleg or bootcut jeans or khaki shorts, both with simple tee shirts, mostly in plain white or black. The other popular look was the summer standby of pretty dresses. I saw all styles and all prints, but I noticed that they were always knee-length and worn with flat sandals. Florals were everywhere, in an array of colors and prints. The most popular silhouettes were strapless empire waist dresses and loose-fitting spaghetti-strap A-line dresses.

With it being a hot and humid day Chicago, what this tells me is that we, as a whole, dress for comfort. We aren’t slaves to fashion and we don’t throw aside the basics because the powers that be tell us that what’s really hot this season is the most uncomfortable or impractical thing ever.

Well, we’ve reached that funny time of year known in the fashion industry as “fall transition” or, in some circles, “pre-fall”. According to the calendar, spring has been here for only six short weeks, and the weather is just now finally getting warm enough to wear spring fashions without all kinds of extra layers. If you’re at all like me, you’re finally getting excited about wearing your spring outfits, and not quite ready to make a real commitment to your fall wardrobe yet because you just aren’t sure what your tastes will be by the time September rolls around. In light of that, here is a quick rundown of looks that will work for spring, but can take you well into the fall season.

Tee shirts are always a great choice for casual dressing. With cropped jeans or city shorts in summer, or with jeans and a sweater or layered over a long-sleeve tee in winter, tees are classically simple and sexy. Jake’s Dry Goods has a large collection of tees with clever sayings and cute pictures. One of my favorites is the “it is just never enough” tee in grey. The dark color makes this a great piece to transition into fall, while the light 100% cotton fabric is perfect for any type of weather.

Full skirts were hot for spring, and the look will continue for fall, though the look will be more subdued. This denim skirt by Level 99 will be a perfect skirt for summer and into the fall, thanks to the simple silhouette with the nipped-in waist and the shorter length. Wear it now with wedges and a tank top or tee, and into fall with a sweater and knee high boots.

Jackets are must-have seasonless pieces essential to any wardrobe. A belted jacket like this one from Christopher Blue can be worn a variety of ways. It can be worn over a summery dress to extend its life into fall, or it can be worn as the showcase piece of an outfit, with simple khaki pants and a white tank. Carry it with you in the summer as an extra layer for cool evenings, or wear it to work as part of your casual-day wardrobe.

Ready for a trend that’s sure to get you noticed? Global-inspired prints and colors are a way to add a really unique, attention-grabbing look to your wardrobe. Bold patterns bring a bit of punch and pizzazz to a basic silhouette and can make an otherwise mundane outfit more exciting.

This geometric print dress by Ali Ro (a division of Donna Morgan) is an attention-grabbing piece, perfect for work or a lunch date. The earthy neutrals compliment a variety of skin tones, and the straight cut skims the body in all the right places. Strappy black or brown sandals with a slight heel would compliment the dress perfectly.

Kische’s tie-back top with empire waist has two bold patterns that play off one another in a quirky way. The colored print is a zebra-stripe print, while the black and white has a graphic leopard-spot feel. This fun combination of prints in bright primary colors and the flattering silhouette make this top great for work, when paired with black pants or Capris and black heeled sandals. Or, use it to top a sleek pair of dark denim Capris or city shorts and wedges for a daytime look.

A longer tunic-type top like this one from Lynn Ritchie is a great casual piece to wear with jeans or leggings. The graphic blue, white, and black print has a retro feel that works well with flat sandals and “skinny” pants. The shirring on the front and back of the top makes it slightly fitted and extremely flattering. This is a great piece for a casual date or a day of shopping.

Patriotic prints and nautical colors are always in for summer. This year is no different, with runway collections showcasing stars, stripes, and polka-dots in a variety of bold colors. Ready-to-wear designers have toned it down a little bit, making the patterns more subtle and wearable.

Lilla P makes a great bateau–neck tee with white and green stripes. The white edging on the elbow-length sleeves and around the neckline give a nice finished appearance, while the 3-button detail on the left shoulder is a quirky attention-drawing touch. This piece is very casual, perfect for a Saturday barbeque or a night at a music festival. Wear it with a preppy denim skirt and white tennis shoes or with relaxed fit khaki pants or capris.

This Henley top with ¾ length sleeves and rhinestone buttons comes in two hot summer colors-jungle blue and rhumba peach. Tiny white polka dots, a very flattering pattern, are scattered from top to bottom. Another casual top, this one would look perfect on a cool summer evening with white Capri pants and a white jacket. Finish the look with strappy white flat sandals and a few white beaded bracelets, and you’ll look perfect for whatever comes your way.

Persimmon red is a perfect color for a hot summer day, and this A-line crochet sweater by 525 America is just that- perfect! Made of lightweight cotton and in a cool sleeveless silhouette, this top will take you anywhere, from a concert in the park to dining al fresco. Wear it with a variety of basic pieces: khakis cargo pants, boot cut jeans, black or white pants in a crisp cotton, or, if you’re feeling extra patriotic, try it with navy city shorts! Fun and Flirty

Full, flirty skirts with tiny waists are a fun look for warm weather. They are perfect for enhancing curves and hiding trouble spots on the lower body, and they’re comfortable, too! This season, the length can vary from mini to mid-calf. Available in a variety of fabrics, they can be dressed up or down, making them ideal for a multitude of occasions.

In the Wash makes a great 100% cotton version of the skirt in a bold red, black, and white floral print. The bold colors and print are cheery and fun for those warm summer days. With a simple ribbed cotton tank or tee and flat black sandals, this is a great look for the weekend. Add a cropped black cardigan for a workday look, or change to a sleek black fitted sweater and heels for a date look.

Chaudry’s white lacy three-tiered skirt in eggshell is a longer version of the look. This skirt, also in cotton, has a more casual feel, thanks to the long length and more “peasant skirt” feel. Hot Summer Looks

Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. We can finally start wearing those spring fashions without freezing, so let’s take a look at just a few more hot spring and summer 2008 trends!

Shape-enhancing full skirts are perfect for this warm weather. They can be dressy or casual, depending on the color, print, and fabric. Soft white cotton is breezy and cool and perfect when topped with a simple tank top or tee, while a satiny fabric with a beautiful floral print would be wonderful with strappy heeled sandals and a lacy camisole for a party-time look. To perfectly play this look for summer, make sure to define your waist with a belt or tucked in top, or compliment the fullness of the skirt with a snug cropped sweater or jacket.

For several years, the spring and summer seasons have been all about nautical and patriotic looks. This season is no different, though the focus of the trend is different. This year, the focus is on nautical-inspired prints like stars, extra-big polka dots, and wide stripes. Also in are those festive and patriotic colors of red, white, and blue. Mix and match the prints with the solid colors for pretty and preppy looks perfect for hot summer days and nights.

Big, bold prints are great for summer. This year’s prints and colors are inspired by a multitude of global cultures. Try Asian-inspired florals, African abstract prints, Native American embroidery, or even bright solids inspired by Indian saris. Inspiration from the goddesses

Greek-inspired dresses were hot on the spring runways this year. Graceful draping and wrapping of loose, flowing fabric was showcased by several designers, and the time has come for those trends to make their way to stores for us fashion-conscious folks to pick up. While draping goes well on the most formal dresses you can find, small doses look great for everyday wear.

This purple top from Weston Wear is a great classy piece for work or play. The ruched and folded fabric over the breasts enhances them, while the slightly draped fabric on the bodice flatters as it lightly skims the body. The double layer of mesh fabric is thin and cool for spring and summer, but still covers thoroughly. Worn with a pair of black Capri pants or cute jeans with platform sandals, this top can take you from a busy day to a fun-filled night.

Mac & Jac make this 100% silk dress. The neutral floral print on white background would be great for a casual wedding or a dinner date, when accompanied with strappy sandals and a black clutch. This dress is a very flattering shape. The inset empire waist gathers the fabric and lets it drape loosely around the body. A tie in back allows you to wear it as tightly or loosely as you choose.

Finally, Tee Party uses angled seaming and gathered fabric to dress up an otherwise-basic tee. Cap sleeves and button details along the seams add interest and complete the look. This tee is a perfect shirt for lounging at the beach or running errands. It would look great with a denim skirt or khaki city shorts and peep-toe ballet flats.

Though it is usually a look saved for tailored suiting and office-only wear, menswear-inspired pieces are a great anytime look this spring. Classic men’s pieces like the jacket, the vest, the tailored trouser, and the button-down shirt are given ruffles, pleats, and other shaping devices to make them woman-friendly.

For a cute casual look, a vest over any type of top is different and fun. Try it over a plain white tee with jeans or a denim skirt with sandals for a day of running errands. Or, wear it to the office over a classic white button-down with lightweight flare-leg pants or khaki city shorts. This vest from Kersh is available in ink blue and pomegranate, both of which compliment a variety of colors.

Jackets are back again in a big way. Though not typically a spring and summer trend, they are perfect for spicing up your workday look and will be great transition pieces for fall. The lightweight fabric is perfect for the warm spring weather that is on its way. Perfect for spring, ombre and tie-die are bold, colorful looks that really stand out. The dip-dye technique of ombre gives a subtle variation of color, while tie-dye melds together a variety of colors into a unique pattern. Though technically not of the ombre technique, these two tops are definitely inspired by the trend.

The “Desert Stripe Top” from G Wheels combines greens, purples, and oranges into an eye-catching pattern. With simple jeans or black pants, this top is versatile enough to dress up or down. Worn as a drape-neck top, it is a beautiful evening look, sure to stand out among basic blacks and neutrals. Worn off-the-shoulder, it is more casual, perfect for a lunchtime date with a girlfriend or an afternoon of shopping.

The floral tunic from Libertalia is more subtle, with a band of color coming down the front on the right and ombre-look monochromatic sleeves. Looking closely, the sleeves are graduated from gray to white to black, as though dip-dyed twice. This shirt is edgy and rock-inspired, thanks to the uneven hem, contrast stitching, and metallic studs. Worn over a pair of dark jeans and black heels, it is perfect for a casual date-night look.

As the snow continues to melt and rain washes away the last of the sandy, salty mess, I am reminded that spring is a time for revitalization, refreshment and new life. With that in mind, I think it is a perfect time to touch on a few additional trends for spring. These trends are both sophisticated and fun, making them perfect additions to a versatile spring wardrobe.

Metallics continue to be hot this year, especially in footwear. Metallics are great because they are so versatile. In a flat or wrap sandal, silver or gold are cool and casual. In a stiletto or peep-toe high heel, they are dressy and alluring. A top with a foil print or few metallic threads woven in can be casual with jeans or khaki walking shorts, while a draped top in a pale champagne gold dresses up a summer suit or pencil skirt. Colors like champagne gold, faded silver, and bronze are perfect compliments to the basic black and white that will also be hot.

Color plays a big role in spring fashion trends this year. Tie-dye and ombre fabrics are cheerful, bright, summery fabrics that liven up the season. Ombre, a dip-dye technique where color is graduated from dark to light, is a more subtle and almost elegant version of the bright colorful look, as compared to tie-dye. A very simple skirt or dress in an ombre fabric would be a great addition to any wardrobe! Or, if bold color is too much for you, try an ombre scarf or headband for just a touch.

Menswear is back in a big way this spring. Suits, trousers, blazers, and button-down tops are all hot, especially when feminized with nipped-in waists, lace trim, or ruffles. These looks are obviously perfect for the workday, with their tailored, professional looks, but they can be made more casual by use of linen or cotton fabrics or pale, pretty colors.

Greek-inspired dressing is a perfect look for evening this spring. Dresses are folded, twisted, pleated, and draped to hang gracefully on the body, skimming curves and adding shape. If you love the look, as I do, but don’t have anywhere to show off a fantastic dress, a wonderful draped blouse worn with loose black pants or even jeans would be a great compromise.

Welcome to the Jungle

The Safari look is one of my favorites for the season. Though it seems a little hard to interpret for everyday wear, this is actually one of the easiest looks to reinvent. Khaki, beige, cream, or olive drab pants fit this look, as do shirt dresses in the same colors. Or, belt a jacket or cardigan over bootcut pants and a white button-down top. The Clothes Gallery has two great jackets that would be perfect for this look.

First, try this Maestro silver glazed linen coat. The empire waist and double-breast are classy and flattering, adding a look of elegance to any outfit. The light silver fabric compliments an array of skin tones. Wear it with jeans for a dressed-up weekend look or black pants for a workday look.

Armand & Alba’s one-button cardigan in khaki is a great look for this trend. The lightweight knit and ¾ length sleeves are great for warm spring days, worn over a floral dress or with khaki capris and a white silk top. Six More Weeks

Puxatawney Phil saw his shadow a few days ago, which means six or more long weeks of winter. The forecast for the upcoming weeks echoes that with almost a foot of snow predicted, but I still think it’s a great time to touch on a few key spring trends. Maybe if we all start wishing hard enough for the warm weather, it will come early, despite the predictions!

The biggest trends for spring seem to juxtapose one another: frilly feminine and structured safari-type looks will both be hot. Though both are great on their own, they can be worn together for a look that’s sweet and sleek.

The feminine trend is one of the most prominent for spring 2008. Light, flowing fabrics; soft floral prints; muted neutrals; ruffles; and lace are the key notes for the trend. Transparent looks, pleats, and soft draping are also big. Try out this trend in a pretty floral-print slip dress with ruffled hem and dainty wrap sandals, or layer several lacy camisoles in complementary colors under a beige chiffon top so the colors are muted and soft. If you’re looking for a more elegant look, wear a one-shoulder draped dress in a gauzy fabric with metallic heels and some small sparkly earrings. The soft, flowing fabrics of this trend are great for camouflaging your less-than-perfect spots, and the muted colors look great on almost any skin tone.

If girly and pretty isn’t your thing, the safari trend might be more your style. This style takes its queues from the 70s in khaki pantsuits, curve-hugging overalls, and canvas shorts-and-jacket combos. Everything is belted to enhance the waist. The look is structured, sexy, and a bit rugged. Any of theses styles would look great with the other safari-inspired look: tribal prints. A complete opposition to the feminine trend, tribal prints are bold, bright, and fun. Liven up a pantsuit or khaki shorts with a tribal-print silk blouse or scarf, or cover a tribal-print dress with a belted canvas jacket. This trend is conservative enough for daytime wear, but still sexy enough for night

One final hot trend for this spring is the return of the high waist. Find it on everything from pencil skirts to trousers and from hot pants to jeans. Though I personally find this look a bit difficult to pull off (but I still have some baby fat on my tummy and hips), it can work if you are sure to get bottoms that fit perfectly and wear them with a fitted, tucked in top. Add a belt for some pizzaz, and you have a great look for work or play.

Finally, a note about color: bright, bold blocks of color are the way to go. Red, yellow, black, and white are the key colors for the season. Red looks fresh when worn in a flirty ruffled dress or silk blouse. Yellow is great in a satin top paired with clean white high-waist pants or, for a casual look, in a ribbed t-shirt with khaki cargo shorts and matching jacket. Black and white are especially hot when worn together in bold graphic designs or in sleek tailored separates.

The key for this spring is to make sure you love what you wear. There are so many different looks out there, you'll be sure to find one that fits your personality!

Allow Me to Introduce Myself

The new year is here, and I’ve decided that I'm not going to bore you with some cliché entry about it being the perfect time for a wardrobe change, or a great time to make it your goal to try a new look, or to change that one thing about yourself that you just don’t like. Instead, I’m going to give you a bit of my history and background so that you can decide for yourself if you would like me to usher you through the wonderful world of fashion for 2008 and beyond. If you like what you read, please stop back often (and you can visit my personal blog Life in General). If you don’t like it, no hard feelings and I wish you the best in your quest for fashion.

Where to begin? The beginning of my fashion awakening, I guess…..When I was in high school, I was the furthest thing from a fashion plate. I was chubby, shy, and pimply, with a bad haircut and no sense of style. A tomboy through and through, my favorite outfit was a pair of straitleg jeans and my fast-pitch softball sweatshirt with my hair in a frizzy permed-once-too-often mess. I claimed to not care about what the “cool” girls wore, though I’m still not sure if that was because I knew I couldn’t pull off their clothes with my less-than-perfect looks, or if it was just that I enjoyed being different. When I was a senior, I quit my job in the town’s main hardware store for a sales position at the only other place that was hiring: the accessories chain at the local mall. That was the beginning of the change.No longer could I schlep to work in my beloved jeans and an Ace Hardware t-shirt; the most casual I could go on my new dress code was khaki cargo pants and a button-down men’s shirt. Suddenly, I was required to-gasp-dress like a girl! I soon discovered that I had an inner fashion diva just waiting to get out. (Picture the change in Andy from The Devil Wears Prada. That was the transformation I went through.) Within the first month, my 30-minute daily lunch break became a 30 minute daily power-shopping trip. As soon as the mall opened, one of us girls would head out to scout which stores had the best sales and we’d all head over there as soon as we were able. After just a few months, the manager of the salon in the mall offered me a free hair-cut-and-color-package with one of her student stylists, and I emerged a sleeker, smoother, shinier version of myself. In my circle of friends, I became known as the one with the way-out-there sense of style, and I relished the attention that came with the title.After a year of art school during the day and accessory-selling by night, I realized that I really enjoyed- no, make that, adored- fashion. I decided that art school wasn’t for me, and instead enrolled in a program called Fashion Merchandising. Within four years, I found myself as a buyer at the accessory chain, with a brand-new dress code, a brand-new address, and a brand-new paycheck! My new job as a buyer required that I keep up with each and every trend. Aided by the company’s Trend Department in New York, I devoured copies of Women’s Wear Daily and InStyle, and I soaked up fashion knowledge like a well-dressed sponge. I began to learn the merits of name-brand versus knock-off, of leather versus pleather, of dupioni silk versus silk satin. As my knowledge grew, my wardrobe shrank. Instead of wasting $10 or $20 dollars on a pair of shoes or pants that would fall apart in a few weeks, I began to invest in top-of-the-line leather stilettos and 100% wool trousers. These were timeless pieces that would last a lifetime.
Then, six months ago, everything changed. As my daughter approached her 6-month birthday, I realized that I needed to be home with her more than I needed another little black dress. I made the decision to work part-time from home and quit the paycheck, the stressful corporate life, and the fashion. But, as it turned out, I couldn’t quit the fashion. Now, I’m smart enough to realize that my daughter doesn’t know whether I’m wearing Steve Maddens or Steve Madden knock-offs from the chain shoe place at the strip mall, but I also know that I wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t keep tabs on Proenza, Vera, and Stella. As a compromise, I keep my actual shopping to a minimum and my window shopping to a maximum.That brings me to today, writing this blog for The Clothes Gallery. Sherree and I met last March when I was trying to get my home-based business off the ground. She said she loved the idea of a blog on the site, but just didn't have the time to keep it up herself. It sounded like the perfect way for me to share my fashion knowledge with others. I mean, really, what good is it knowing what the hottest looks are if you can't weigh in on them?

So, that about sums it up. I’ve been to almost every extreme on the fashion scale, from not-caring-Nellie to label-snob-Leslie. Today, I find myself comfortably in the middle, aware but not obsessed, ready to filter the best of the best and help you navigate the fashion jungle, aided, as always, by the fashion savvy girls at The Clothes Gallery.
